Why English to Norwegian is harder than it looks
Norwegian has two official written standards. Bokmål and Nynorsk are both correct Norwegian, and the choice is not cosmetic. Messaging is overwhelmingly Bokmål, which is what a translation should produce unless you know the reader prefers otherwise.
Gratulerer med dagen covers more than birthdays. It is the standard congratulation for the day itself, used for birthdays and national day alike. A literal English “congratulations on the day” misses that it is a set phrase.
Three genders, and the article goes on the end. En bil becomes bilen, and feminine nouns add a third pattern that some speakers use and others avoid. There is no way to derive the gender from the word.
Dialects are written, not just spoken. Norwegians often text in their own dialect rather than standard Bokmål, which is unusual among European languages. A translation into standard Bokmål is always understood, but it will read more neutral than a dialect message would.
